Program Description

A felt sense of safety is not only instrumental, but a foundational requirement for positive developmental growth and healing in play therapy. This training offers practical, neurobiologically-informed approaches to strengthening felt safety in the playroom. Participants will explore key considerations, actionable strategies, and intentional steps to help a child feel safe within their internal world, their environment, and their relationship with the therapist.

Learning Objectives

  1. Describe the importance of felt safety as a foundational condition for positive developmental growth and healing in play therapy.
  2. Explain the association between a child’s past experiences and their current sense of felt safety.
  3. List key considerations that impact a child’s sense of felt safety across the domains of internal world, environment, and therapeutic relationship.
  4. Explain the importance of the therapist’s own felt sense of safety and regulation in supporting co-regulation and creating a safe therapeutic environment.
  5. Analyze the role of play in promoting felt safety in the playroom, including how different types of play can support regulation, connection, and engagement.
  6. Create an individualized action plan outlining at least three steps to enhance felt safety in upcoming play therapy sessions.
